On Friday, I decided to get out of the “arse end of nowhere”, which is Plymouth, as the shops here are good but lack new trends. I headed up to Exeter, which is only two & half hours away from London by train compared to Plymouth which is three & a half.
Not to my surprise I was abled to get the Retro Luxe Matte Lip Kit from Revolution (£6), which I’d been on the hunt for. Except… they were hidden away by staff as people have been opening them up and stealing the products. Like seriously, stealing budget makeup? No one is touching the higher end stuff in Superdrug, which blows my mind! This shows that people are really seeing this as a dupe to the Kylie Lip Kit. I even had a girl asking me about it in store as she wanted the Kylie Lip Kit, but didn’t want to pay the high end price.
It’s no secret that I love the Kylie Lip Kits (except for Kourt K, that one is pants!) so I’m always looking out for something which can match it.
The packaging is clearly a nod to the original Lip Kit, even when you open it up there is the similar cardboard divider separating the two products. The rose gold detail is really on trend making the product feel a little extra compared to other products from Revolution.
One thing I did notice, was that the shades noted on the box were way darker than the actual lipstick colour. Originally I wanted Reign as it looked like a good dupe for Candy K, except in store it was way lighter than the box suggested! In the end I picked up Noble which is a dark nude/brown.
The pencil is really creamy and I would say it is a very good dupe for the Kylie Cosmetics’ lip pencils. Bizarrely, the pencil is lighter than the actual the lipstick. If it was darker I could understand as that would be really useful for lip contour, but it’s lighter?! The lipstick however… Is much thicker in consistency than real Lip Kits. It’s more of a moose texture like the NYX Lingerie lipsticks. It isn’t drying to the lips, which is great. The doe applicator isn’t as soft as the Kylie Lip Kit, but that’s what you get with cheaper products.
My boyfriend said “It looks like a £6 lipstick.”
It’s patchy round the edges of lips, this is with the liner! I put two coats on and it just looked quite thick, compared to the real Lip Kit. Here’s my biggest problem with it, it is so sticky it makes my lips stick together! This is definitely not a date lipstick!! Even with one coat, I still get sticking of the lips. After a few hours of wear the lipstick starts to crumble and looks quite flaky on the lips.
Overall, it’s an OK kit. If you can’t really afford the Kylie Lip Kit this would be a good product to have as it makes you feel like you have one. Personally, I won’t be using the lipstick again although I quite like the pencil.
I’d say check out some other liquid lipsticks out there from the lower end, like NYX. If you do have the money the original is great, but you have to really question if you want to spend that much on your lips.
